Co-Captains – Base and Jamie

Captain Base

captain-baseSailing was something Base was introduced to from a young age he grew up sailing the local waters around Perth and Mandurah. His love of surfing took over and it took him all around the world…. but his love for sailing was still there.

As a First mate on a traditional Gulet Sailing Vessel in Greece was where the dream to captain his own vessel was born. Working on sailing yachts in California, and then sailing across the Pacific over 7 months to Tonga and then to New Zealand added sea miles under his belt.

Base came back to Australia and bought his first boat a  1960’s 24 foot Endeavour on the Swan River, and while that was a the perfect boat for river sailing and ocean voyages (that were quite adventurous), the dream to Captain his own vessel really started to become real with the purchase of Charade.

Charade is a 36ft Bruce Roberts Ketch, and with a more traditional style and set up for coastal cruising was the perfect next step in a vessel. Charade has Commercial registrations that means she can be a charter boat or sail training vessel. Having Sailed Charade up and back down the West Australian Coast we got to live the dream on our beautiful boat. We both love sailing and sharing the local waters off Freo, Mandurah and Dunsborough with people keen to get out there is always such a great way to spend time! .

Captain Base has his RYA Offshore Yachtmaster qualification, and has over 2000 nautical miles logged. He loveBasebazzas everything maritime and if you like stories of shipwrecks on the WA coast he will talk your ear off. As a geologist and passionate naturalist he is the man to talk to about the stars, birds and anything to do with the ocean or the earth.

Charade is a comfortable boat and the perfect size for Base to show you the ropes and get you behind the wheel. Whether you want to see if sailing is the life for you, or just want to enjoy a drink, and do some dolphin spotting, get in touch with Captain Base and come for a sail!

Captain Jamie Van Jones

Jamie grew up in inland Canada far away from either coast, but the lure of the Ocean captured her from a young age. As an adult, she has made all of her life decisions to be on, in, or near the ocean as much as possible. Jamie met Base 11 years ago and that is where she caught the sailing bug. up the mast

Jamie learnt to sail on the Swan River, but with dreams to sail much further she began gathering her sea time. Jamie worked for 6 months on a sailing charter boat in the Northwest Kimberley and out of Fremantle. She has studied her commercial Coxswains ticket and also did a year of working with The Fremantle Sea Rescue.

Jamie is passionate about the planet and has worked in the environmental sector for the last 12 years. She loves sailing for the amazing way it uses the natural resource of the wind to get places and reduces our reliance on fossil fuels. While the boating sector isn’t always the cleanest, Jamie makes sure to run a Green ship as much as possible including living and keeping the business single use plastic free.

Jamie inspires other on how easy it can be to live an eco life with online programs and guides over at www.jamievanjones.com as well as working in online marketing and web design.

As a surfer, sailor and eco-living advocate Jamie loves getting people out into nature. So come for a sail and escape the busy city life for a beautiful sail on the Indian Ocean.
